The importance of effective monitoring and evaluation in combating corruption in Nigeria was underscored by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN). He emphasized that these measures are crucial for promoting good governance, transparency, and efficiency in both the public and private sectors. Fagbemi highlighted corruption as a major obstacle to Nigeria’s development goals and stressed the need for robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks to manage policies and programs aimed at combating corruption.
Fagbemi noted that there is a growing demand for accountability in governance from various stakeholders, necessitating results-based monitoring and evaluation systems to track progress and improve decision-making. He explained that such activities are essential for measuring progress and refining policies, serving as the foundation of strategic initiatives.
The inauguration of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2022–2026 Monitoring and Evaluation Committee aims to strengthen the implementation of the action plan effectively. Fagbemi reiterated that corruption erodes trust in institutions and impedes service delivery efficiency. He emphasized the committee’s role in aligning with the anti-corruption agenda to eradicate corruption and enhance the effectiveness of anti-corruption agencies.
Fagbemi urged committee members to fully commit to their responsibilities, emphasizing the collaborative approach needed to combat corruption effectively. The committee, chaired by the AGF, consists of key government officials and stakeholders. Fagbemi charged the committee to fulfill its mandate, emphasizing its significant contribution to the fight against corruption and governance improvement.
