A police officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested and held in custody following an unintended discharge of his firearm that resulted in the death of a young woman named Ifeoluwa Adekalu in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State. The incident occurred at Okela Police Station in Ado Ekiti, where the officer accidentally fired a bullet that struck the woman in front of a nearby shop. Reports indicate that the officer was at the station on a visit and discharged his weapon in a celebratory manner upon hearing about a colleague’s promotion.
The victim, who was said to be returning from paying her rent, was hit by the bullet and rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. Another source mentioned that the woman was heading towards the police station after getting off a commercial motorcycle when the tragic event took place.
State Police Commissioner, Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident and stated that the officer responsible has been disarmed and detained. Further investigations will be carried out in accordance with the Nigerian Police Act.
