An individual, identified as Omodara Dada, aged 26, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by an Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti Division for committing burglary. The court found Dada guilty of robbing a person of a phone worth N64,000 and N8,000 in cash while wielding a knife in 2022. The crime took place in Ado Ekiti, leading to Dada being arraigned before Justice Lekan Ogunmoye on a charge of armed robbery as stipulated in the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2011.
During the trial, it was revealed that Dada stole a phone and cash from the victim, who thwarted the theft attempt and sought help from others to apprehend Dada. The prosecution presented evidence, including witness testimonies, victim and defendant statements, a knife, and the stolen cash, to support the case.
Following the proceedings, Dada, through his legal representative, requested leniency from the court. In delivering the verdict, Justice Ogunmoye noted that while the evidence did not fully support the charge of armed robbery, it did establish the offense of burglary beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, Dada was convicted of burglary under the Criminal Law of Ekiti State and was sentenced to seven years in prison, effective from the date of his detention at the Federal Correctional Facility in Ado-Ekiti.
