Ekiti pays farmers affected by road projects N71.5m compensation

The coordinator of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project in Ekiti State, mentioned that significant compensation totaling N71.5 million has been disbursed to farmers and individuals affected by rural road projects. Speaking in the Ekiti State capital, the coordinator announced plans to upgrade five rural roads that were initiated in 2021. The identified pilot roads for upgrade include Itaji-Orisunmibare road, Iyin – Odo Oro – Aroto road, Ago Aduloju – Kajola road, Imesi -Kosomolate – Ipole road, and Ogotun – Alagbede road.

The coordinator highlighted the completion of bush clearing on 12 roads where compensations had been paid to affected parties. The delay in compensating farmers on one road was attributed to the revalidation process for affected individuals, hindering the contractor from commencing bush clearing. Progress reports indicated varying percentages of work completion across the 13 road contracts awarded in July.

Acknowledging the commendable pace of work on specific roads, the coordinator expressed optimism about the timely completion of certain road projects if the current pace is sustained. Emphasizing the importance of quality work, he mentioned that project progress is closely monitored by the Project Monitoring Committee and relevant government agencies.

Discussing the economic benefits of the project to Ekiti residents, the coordinator disclosed that contractors are providing employment opportunities to both skilled and unskilled labor from the communities benefiting from the project.
