Ekiti to review emergency law, establish LG disaster committees

Ekiti State’s Deputy Governor, Mrs. Monisade Afuye, recently shared the state government’s intention to revise the law governing the State Emergency Management Agency to include local government emergency management committees. This comprehensive review aims to improve disaster management from the grassroots to the state level, reducing property damage and loss of life. The Deputy Governor highlighted the importance of aligning with national and international standards to enhance community safety.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji has allocated funds for educating Ekiti residents on disaster prevention measures. The government appreciates the Federal Government’s quick response to disaster relief efforts and remains committed to collaborating with relevant agencies to address various disasters. Mrs. Afuye emphasized the need for NEMA’s assistance in raising awareness about safety practices and urged for more support to meet immediate needs of disaster victims beyond food items.

NEMA Zonal Director, Mr. Said Akinyode, mentioned the Federal Government’s restructuring to enhance disaster management nationwide. He encouraged the state government to improve the fire service and establish local government emergency committees for more effective disaster management at the grassroots level. Akinyode also requested the provision of a warehouse by the Ekiti State Government for storing relief materials to facilitate NEMA’s operations.
