Emirates’ return will open more routes for indigenous airlines — Keyamo

The return of Emirates Airlines to Nigeria after a two-year break has garnered praise from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. He sees this as an opportunity for local carriers to explore new route possibilities and enhance competition in the aviation sector.

Keyamo expressed his approval of Emirates Airlines’ return while arriving in Lagos aboard one of their aircraft from the United Arab Emirates. He emphasized that the airline’s presence is here to stay and highlighted discussions on the Bilateral Air Service Agreement aimed at securing routes for local operators.

The Minister pointed out that Nigerian carriers now have the chance to operate flights to various destinations in the UAE. He stressed the importance of healthy competition in international routes, leading to competitive pricing that benefits Nigerian travelers.

Keyamo also mentioned the strategic significance of Dubai as a global hub connecting countries worldwide. He highlighted the code-sharing agreement secured for Nigerian airlines, ensuring they have priority in such arrangements.

Acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s support in the agreement, Keyamo emphasized the restoration of the relationship between Nigeria and the UAE. He mentioned the challenges faced due to visa suspensions and flight restrictions, underscoring the significance of the improved bilateral agreement for both countries.

Emirates Airlines had ceased operations in Nigeria due to funds being held in Nigerian accounts. The official delegation accompanying the return of the airline included key executives from the company.
