Enugu to sanction masqueraders for killing two residents

The government has initiated a thorough investigation into the activities of Oriokpa masquerade groups and has pledged to hold those responsible accountable. Reports emerged this week of two individuals losing their lives due to the disruptive actions of Oriokpa masqueraders in the University Town of Nsukka, causing unrest in the surrounding areas.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Okey Ogbodo, confirmed these incidents and reiterated the government’s focus on public safety. As a response, the state government has called upon traditional leaders and community leaders from the affected areas to address the situation.

The affected communities, including Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo, have experienced chaos, injuries, and even fatalities due to the actions of the masqueraders. Governor Peter Mbah has instructed the Commissioner of Police to investigate the events and ensure that those found responsible face legal consequences.

Furthermore, the government has issued a stern warning against any further misconduct by individuals or groups, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding the rights and security of all citizens. The government has expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragic incidents and emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of excesses that threaten the safety and well-being of the people.

The government has scheduled a meeting with traditional rulers and community leaders to address the issues at hand and ensure that such incidents are not repeated. Any future transgressions by Oriokpa masqueraders or any other group will be met with appropriate sanctions by the government to uphold the peace and security of Enugu State.
