EPL: Wolves manager Gary O’Neil sacked after four straight defeats

The head coach of Wolves, Gary O’Neil, has been relieved of his duties after a series of four consecutive Premier League losses. The team’s current position is second from the bottom in the table with only nine points from 16 games. This decision follows their recent 2-1 defeat at home to Ipswich.

Tensions escalated during the match, resulting in Rayan Ait-Nouri receiving a second yellow card and Matheus Cunha needing to be restrained. In an official statement released by Wolves, they confirmed the departure of Gary O’Neil and his coaching staff, thanking them for their efforts over the past 16 months.

O’Neil, aged 41, took over as head coach in August 2023 and had signed a new four-year contract earlier this year. While the team finished 14th in his first season, this season has presented significant challenges, with Wolves now facing a relegation battle.

Further incidents occurred in a recent match against West Ham, where player Mario Lemina was involved in a post-match scuffle with Jarrod Bowen, leading to Lemina being stripped of the captaincy.

Despite initially taking the lead against Ipswich, Wolves suffered a late defeat with Jack Taylor scoring a stoppage-time winner. O’Neil expressed the need for his players to take accountability and address on-field matters seriously to improve the team’s situation.

“We deal with things like that very, very seriously. It’s frustrating because we’ve already got enough to handle at the moment. The players need to take some responsibility, but I’ll support them in every way. We’ll get back to work on Monday morning,” O’Neil stated.
