Equinix, a major infrastructure company and the parent organization of MainOne, has named Wole Abu as the Managing Director of its West Africa operations. Abu will take over from Funke Opeke, who originally established MainOne and continued to lead it post its acquisition by Equinix for $320 million in 2022.
Abu’s appointment as Managing Director for Equinix’s West African business comes after the recent launch of Equinix’s latest data center in Johannesburg. In his new role, Abu will be responsible for overseeing Equinix’s operations in West Africa, collaborating closely with local and international companies to reinforce the existing foundations for connectivity and progress in the region, extending Equinix’s reach to West Africa, as stated by the company.
Prior to this role, Abu served as the CEO of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Nigeria and the Africa Data Centre. He has previous experience at Airtel and Pan African Towers. Abu expressed his enthusiasm for joining Equinix, emphasizing a shared vision for expanding digital infrastructure across Africa. He highlighted the significance of this mission in delivering essential services to the region and narrowing the digital gap. By empowering both enterprises and individuals, the aim is to foster greater participation in the global digital economy and create a more interconnected, accessible digital landscape across Africa.
