A former Upper Shari’a Court Judge, Mahmoud Shehu, has been granted bail by a Magistrate Court in Zaria, Kaduna State after being accused of assaulting a visually impaired housewife.
The Senior Magistrate, Ibrahim Adamu Salisu, ruled that Shehu could be released on bail under certain conditions, including providing two civil servant sureties of Grade level 10 and a deposit of N100,000.
The two sureties are required to submit their promotion letters, passport photos, addresses, and contact numbers. Failure to meet these conditions will result in Shehu being held in custody until the next court date scheduled for February 11, 2025.
Shehu faced charges for allegedly unlawfully entering the victim’s residence, using force, and physically assaulting her, which are violations of Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State 2017.
The prosecutor, Adamu Abubakar, recounted that the incident took place on September 6, 2024, where Shehu reportedly locked the victim’s gate, followed her into her room, and assaulted her, along with two other women who intervened.
The victim sought medical attention at PHC Tudun Wada due to the injuries sustained from the assault. Shehu, however, denied the allegations during the court proceedings.
Initially filed at the Magistrate Court in Tudun Wada, Zaria on September 10, 2024, the case was later transferred to Chief Magistrate Court 1 Chediya after multiple adjournments and the withdrawal of the Presiding Judge, Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi.
