Ex-VON DG blames PDP for Nigeria’s drift towards one-party state

A former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr Osita Okechukwu, expressed his views on the responsibility for Nigeria’s move towards a one-party state, attributing it to the Peoples Democratic Party rather than the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Okechukwu, speaking in Enugu, dismissed claims that the APC, including President Bola Tinubu, was to blame for the situation, stating that it was actually the PDP’s actions during its 16-year rule that set the stage for Nigeria’s current political landscape.

He highlighted how the PDP, once the major opposition party, had succumbed to a culture of impunity, leading to its own downfall and inadvertently paving the way for a one-party dominance. Okechukwu emphasized that the PDP’s failure to uphold key political conventions and principles had contributed to the current state of affairs.

Regarding efforts to address economic challenges, Okechukwu mentioned initiatives being undertaken by the APC, including discussions on fuel price reductions and plans to resolve herders/farmers’ conflicts. He also referenced ongoing negotiations led by President Tinubu to attract investment in key sectors like electricity, railways, and seaports, aiming to improve the country’s economic situation.

Overall, Okechukwu remains optimistic about the future, suggesting that with strategic interventions and foreign investments facilitated by the development commissions across various regions, Nigeria’s economic hardships could be mitigated.
