Exclusive: Lagos in talks with IHS and WIOCC to expand fibre duct infrastructure

In discussions with the Lagos State Government, IHS Towers and WIOCC are collaborating to extend the existing 6,000km fiber duct project to 36,000km. The project, initiated in 2020, faced delays due to contractual disputes with the initial contractor, Western Telecoms and Engineering Services Limited. Despite challenges, significant progress was made with 2,700km of fiber duct laid by Western Telecoms, connecting major telecom operators like MTN Nigeria, Airtel, and others.

The expansion of the project, now led by IHS and WIOCC, aims to enhance internet quality in Lagos, a hub for startups and multinationals. This initiative aligns with the state’s “Dig-Once” policy introduced in 2020 to streamline fiber deployment and prevent damage to existing infrastructure. By implementing durable ducts to protect fiber cables, the project seeks to boost telecom services’ reliability and longevity.

Noteworthy is the significance of completing the fiber duct project by 2027, coinciding with the current administration’s tenure. This effort mirrors similar strategies adopted by states like Osun, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Cross River, emphasizing the importance of sustainable infrastructure development.
