FCCPC warns Air Peace against obstructing ongoing inquiry

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has cautioned Air Peace regarding hindering the current investigation into alleged unfair ticket pricing and potential violations of consumer rights. The Commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, issued a statement emphasizing the surge in passenger complaints about pricing discrepancies, flight cancellations, and other practices that could harm consumers.

Following a meeting held with Air Peace on December 3, 2024, to address these concerns, the FCCPC stressed the importance of maintaining confidentiality during the inquiry. Despite leaks to the media misrepresenting the proceedings, the Commission reiterated that its investigation into Air Peace is ongoing.

The FCCPC highlighted that the investigation includes examining Air Peace’s pricing strategies, particularly after the airline proposed significant fare increases for domestic flights. Consumer complaints have challenged these figures, alleging inflated fuel costs. The Commission compared Air Peace’s pricing to a competitor that recently lowered fares, indicating that affordability and sustainability can coexist in the aviation industry.

In addition to pricing concerns, passengers have raised issues about arbitrary flight cancellations and inadequate compensation practices. The FCCPC cited instances of passenger protests at airports due to delays and reported cases where passengers had to pay surcharges to rebook flights after cancellations.

Despite attempts to divert attention from the inquiry, the FCCPC remains steadfast in safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair and competitive practices in all sectors, including aviation. The Commission emphasized its commitment to upholding consumer rights, promoting market fairness, and fostering transparency across industries.
