In the Federal Capital Territory, a significant milestone has been achieved with 61,384 individuals living with HIV/AIDS successfully receiving treatment. This accomplishment was highlighted by the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat of the FCT Administration during a press conference commemorating the 2024 World AIDS Day in Abuja.
The focus of this year’s World AIDS Day, themed “Take the Right Path: Sustain HIV Response, Stop HIV Among Children,” emphasizes the importance of addressing pediatric HIV and upholding the rights of all affected by the disease. It serves as a day to unite efforts, raise awareness, provide support to those impacted by HIV/AIDS, and remember those who have passed away.
The Secretary revealed that out of the total number on treatment, 1,048 were children, underlining the commitment to providing life-saving antiretroviral therapy. Despite the HIV prevalence rate in the FCT being slightly higher than the national average, efforts are underway to expand and strengthen HIV services across the territory.
Through a comprehensive network of service delivery points, including conventional and unconventional sites, the FCT aims to ensure that quality care is accessible to all, even in remote areas. Unique interventions like mentor mothers and training for unconventional caregivers play a crucial role in addressing pediatric HIV and promoting prevention measures.
Collaborations with various partners, such as the National AIDS and STI Control Programme and implementing partners, have been instrumental in the FCT’s success. These partnerships have prioritized key populations, women, children, and vulnerable groups, guaranteeing that every individual diagnosed with HIV receives the necessary care and support.
While acknowledging the progress made, the Secretary emphasized the ongoing need to identify cases, facilitate access to care, and prevent new infections, particularly in pediatric HIV cases. Efforts to combat stigma and discrimination, expand outreach to underserved populations, and ensure access to quality care for all those affected by HIV will continue to be a priority for the FCT Administration.
The activities for World AIDS Day will conclude with a road walk from Government Secondary School in Garki to Old Parade Ground in Garki Area 10.
