FCT to introduce e-ticketing to curb traffic offences

The Road Traffic Services Directorate is making significant strides in launching its e-ticketing and central booking system for motorists in the Federal Capital Territory. The Director, Mr Abdulateef Bello, revealed in an interview that the new technological system aims to reduce physical interactions between DRTS operatives and motorists on the roads.

To achieve this, the service has partnered with various electronic traffic management and penalty systems providers. These providers have demonstrated their capabilities through a Proof of Concept by installing devices at strategic locations in the FCT to interpret infractions and issue penalties.

The next steps involve seeking regulatory approval, analysis by the Abuja Investment Company, and submission to the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission for formal procurement. The director anticipates that some systems will be operational by the first quarter of the following year.

The implementation of electronic enforcement is expected to address vehicle offenses and improve safety on FCT roads. Bello emphasized that the goal is to eliminate conflicts between vehicle inspection officers and the motoring public. Offenders will receive alerts on their phones detailing infractions, fines, and instructions for payment, enabling them to continue their journeys.

Furthermore, efforts are underway to train personnel on the e-ticketing scheme and equip officers with the Abuja Inspector App to verify motorists’ compliance. Bello assured that under the FCT Minister’s leadership, gaps in vehicle administration enforcement will not be tolerated.

Motorists are urged to adhere to traffic regulations, maintain up-to-date vehicle papers and driver’s licenses, and comply with the law. The DRTS is committed to enhancing its operations to offer efficient services suitable for the FCT’s standards, with plans to introduce a paperless motor vehicle administration system in the upcoming budget year.
