FG announces free caesarean sections for women

The announcement was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, unveiling that free caesarean sections will now be available to Nigerian women in need. This declaration was made during the launch of the “Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative” at the Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review in Abuja. The initiative aims to decrease maternal and newborn mortality rates in Nigeria.

The minister expressed that no woman should lose her life due to the inability to afford a C-section. The initiative’s main goal is to provide free caesarean sections to eligible poor and vulnerable women, covering services from public and private facilities approved by the National Health Insurance Authority.

Community health workers are highlighted as crucial in creating awareness about maternal care services, especially in remote areas where accessing healthcare facilities is challenging. The National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System have also been revamped to offer timely transport for emergencies, particularly in maternal and newborn care.

The minister acknowledged the invaluable support of development partners in making this initiative possible, emphasizing the collective dedication to health equity and the well-being of Nigerians. He called on all stakeholders to actively support the initiative to address maternal and newborn health challenges effectively.

The Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative aims to enhance the healthcare system by increasing demand for services, expanding primary and emergency care, and eliminating financial barriers. The ultimate goal is to ensure that quality, affordable healthcare is accessible to all Nigerians, promoting a future where no mother or child is deprived of the care they deserve.
