The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation emphasized the importance of water security, local conservation efforts, and water-saving practices during a press briefing to mark the 2025 World Water Day in Abuja. Even though Nigeria lacks glaciers, their preservation is crucial for the global climate system. The minister highlighted Nigeria’s initiatives to improve water access, sanitation, and hygiene, including partnerships and sustainable water management projects.
He called for collaborations among various stakeholders to enhance water security and contribute to peace and development. The Federal Government plans to strengthen climate adaptation policies, improve flood control systems, and invest in sustainable water infrastructure. State governments, private sectors, research institutions, NGOs, communities, and individuals were also urged to play their part in promoting water conservation and environmental sustainability.
The minister launched various reports and guidelines during the event. The Permanent Secretary stressed the significance of managing water as a global and local resource carefully. The Chief of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene at UNICEF Nigeria highlighted the impacts of climate change on water resources and emphasized the need for climate-resilient practices.
A Senior Water Specialist at the World Bank emphasized the importance of preserving water for future generations. The Director-General of UNESCO underscored the critical role glaciers play in the global water cycle and pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to address the impact of climate disruption on glaciers and ice sheets.
The call to action is clear – to prioritize sustainable water management practices and protect water resources for a climate-resilient future.
