The government of the United States donated 10,000 doses of the Jynneos Monkeypox vaccine to Nigeria. Jynneos is an FDA-approved vaccine for smallpox and Mpox prevention in adults at risk. Nigeria reported 40 confirmed Mpox cases out of 830 suspected cases. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasizing the commitment to improving Nigerian citizens’ well-being.
Mpox is a rare viral disease occurring in Central and West Africa caused by the Mpox virus. The US Ambassador to Nigeria highlighted the importance of global health security and the collaboration between the US and Nigeria in responding to the Mpox outbreak. The National Primary Health Care Development Agency acknowledged the significance of the vaccine donation in Nigeria’s preparedness against Mpox.
The donation symbolizes international cooperation in addressing global health challenges. The NPHCDA expressed gratitude for the US’s support and outlined plans to prioritize vaccination for the most affected states and vulnerable populations. The agency emphasized the need for collective action, public awareness, and surveillance in combating the virus.
