The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation recently announced the upcoming launch of the Clean Nigeria Campaign Strategic Plan by the Federal Government. This initiative aims to support the 2030 Open-Defecation Free target nationwide. The Minister highlighted that only 135 local government areas have achieved ODF status. The Strategic Plan outlines a roadmap for achieving a clean Nigeria with improved access to toilets for all by 2030.
Emphasizing the significance of the campaign, the Minister stated that ending open defecation will lead to better health, increased productivity, and enhanced safety for citizens. Active involvement of stakeholders, especially at the sub-national level, will be crucial for the success of the campaign.
The 2024 World Toilet Day theme, “Toilets – A place for peace,” underscores the importance of toilets in promoting peace, protection, and progress for public and environmental health. World Toilet Day is observed annually on November 19 to address global sanitation challenges and work towards achieving SDG 6 by 2030.
Upcoming activities for World Toilet Day include the launch of the Clean Nigeria Campaign Strategic Plan by the Vice President and a commemorative event organized by the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Kano State Government. The Minister highlighted the need for sub-national commitment to drive the campaign and mentioned ongoing efforts to provide more sanitation facilities, with approximately 11.58 million toilets already constructed.
