FG plans seven dams in South-West for irrigation – Official

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority announced plans for the construction of seven dams in the southwestern states to enhance food production and facilitate irrigation. Additionally, the hydropower component of the Oyan Dam is set to be concessioned to improve the country’s power supply. The 46th Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association for Consulting Engineering in Nigeria, held in Lagos, discussed strategies for managing ecological challenges, emphasizing the importance of dams in addressing issues like flooding. The Federal Government aims to build these dams to support agriculture, with each location featuring greenhouses, open fields for farming, and storage facilities. Talks are also underway to concession the dam for power generation. The MD highlighted the need for consulting engineers to design buildings resilient to climate change effects. The association’s President mentioned plans to propose strategies for resilient cities and tackle challenges like building collapses through new regulations and enforcement measures.
