FG seeks collaboration with Gambia on maritime security

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy emphasized Nigeria’s intention to enhance maritime cooperation with the Gambia for regional security and economic growth. This declaration was made at the Fourth Blue Economy Conference in Banjul by the Director-General of NIMASA, representing the Minister.

Nigeria aims to extend its maritime security infrastructure beyond territorial waters, including discussing the potential expansion of the Deep Blue Project’s operations in the Gulf of Guinea region. The country is committed to being a stabilizing force and promoting sustainable development through the blue economy.

Nigeria is working on extending the operational coverage of its Deep Blue assets to enhance maritime security, especially with the increase in shipping traffic around Africa due to global trade disruptions.

Furthermore, the Minister called for support for Nigeria’s bid for re-election to the International Maritime Organization Council (Category ‘C’) for the 2026-2027 term. Nigeria’s representation on the IMO Council is crucial for strengthening Africa’s voice in global maritime decision-making.

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s global recognition for its efforts in maritime security, particularly mentioning the effective deployment of the Deep Blue Project, which has maintained zero piracy incidents in Nigerian waters for the past three years. Nigeria is dedicated to forming strategic partnerships, enhancing maritime security, and promoting economic interests in West and Central Africa through sustainable blue economy initiatives.
