The government has allocated significant funds for the rehabilitation of repentant terrorists and the establishment of terrorism trial centers in recent years. The National Counter-Terrorism Centre was set up following the approval of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Bill. The government announced the establishment of two centers for deradicalizing and reintegrating former members of terrorist groups.
The Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre revealed plans to spend a substantial amount on these centers. Checks showed that the Ministry of Justice had spent a considerable sum on constructing rehabilitation centers and renovating buildings for terrorism trials. Payments were made to various firms for these projects.
The NCTC reported the conviction of hundreds of terrorists in trials held at the Kainji Detention Facility, with sentences ranging from death penalties to life imprisonment. The secrecy surrounding these trials has raised concerns among security experts and civil society groups, with some questioning the authenticity and motives behind the secrecy.
While some experts criticized the secret trials, others defended the government’s decision, citing security reasons. The importance of conducting trials transparently and in accordance with legal procedures was emphasized to ensure fairness and adherence to the rule of law.
