The Federal Government has revealed its intentions to set up Blood Collection Centres in all 774 local government areas, including the Federal Capital Territory. This initiative aims to ensure a sufficient blood supply for medical emergencies and transfusions. The Head of Media and Publicity at the National Blood Service Agency announced this development in Abuja.
The Director-General of the NBSA reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing blood shortages in the country, emphasizing that this effort will be life-saving. The NBSA has collaborated with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps to establish a robust blood bank at the Corps’ medical facility, aiming to alleviate blood shortages during emergencies and provide support to other security agencies.
To kickstart the blood collection project, the FCT will host strategic blood collection facilities in easily accessible locations. This move is expected to boost blood donation rates and ensure a consistent blood supply for medical purposes. The establishment of blood collection centers nationwide reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the healthcare system.
The rollout of this project is anticipated to enhance access to blood transfusions and improve health outcomes for Nigerians. The Deputy Commandant of the NSCDC expressed optimism that this initiative will significantly impact addressing blood shortages and saving lives.
