FG to raise broadband investments by 500% – Minister

The Federal Government is set to boost broadband investments significantly through a new initiative aimed at enhancing internet connectivity nationwide, as stated by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

The initiative, named the National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria, will bring together various stakeholders like public institutions, telecom operators, technology firms, and international partners to improve high-speed internet access, especially in areas with limited coverage.

Despite Nigeria’s broadband penetration standing at 44.43 per cent in December, falling short of the 70 per cent target set under the National Broadband Plan, the government plans to deploy 90,000km of backbone fibre through an approved Special Purpose Vehicle by the Federal Executive Council.

During an event in Lagos, the Minister emphasized that the National Broadband Plan aims at ensuring widespread internet access for all Nigerians, outlining key objectives such as achieving 70 per cent broadband penetration by 2025 and increasing broadband investments by 300-500 per cent by 2027.

Despite existing infrastructure, there is a challenge of underutilization, with many fibre networks remaining inactive due to low demand, affordability issues, and lack of awareness. The National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria aims to address these issues by aggregating broadband demand from various sectors to create a sustainable business model that boosts adoption and reduces service costs.

Pilot states, including Edo, Ogun, Kwara, Katsina, Imo, Abia, Borno, and Nasarawa, have been identified for early implementation, with incentives planned to encourage private-sector involvement.
