FG votes N53bn for 103 foreign missions renovation

The Nigerian government has proposed a budget of N53bn for the renovation of 103 foreign missions. The allocated funds will be used for various purposes such as the renovation of chanceries, staff quarters, ambassadors’ residences, purchase of office furniture, and official vehicles. Specific allocations include amounts for missions in various locations.

President Bola Tinubu, upon assuming office, initiated a review of Nigeria’s foreign policy by recalling 83 ambassadors in September 2023. However, the appointment of new envoys has been delayed due to financial constraints, as confirmed by the foreign affairs minister.

The government is facing challenges in adequately funding its missions worldwide, with an estimated $1bn needed to clear arrears and fully support the nation’s 109 missions. Efforts are ongoing to address operational deficiencies and financial shortfalls in embassies, high commissions, and consulates globally.

The House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs has invited key officials to discuss the inadequate allocation to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in the 2025 budget proposal. The ministry’s needs assessment indicates a requirement of N1.5tn, with calls for a minimum allocation of N500bn to meet essential expenses.

There are concerns that insufficient funding may hinder the government’s efforts to project a positive image globally, especially in international engagements and subscription payments. The lawmaker suggests allowing foreign missions to own properties using a mortgage model to address issues of dilapidated buildings and high rental costs in various host countries.
