The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2023 elections, has criticized the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu for imposing an 18-year age limit on NECO and WAEC exams. Atiku Abubakar described the policy as outdated, absurd, and a hindrance to educational opportunities.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, disclosed the government’s decision to restrict individuals below 18 from taking the NECO and WAEC exams during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics’ program. He emphasized the directive for both exam bodies to enforce the age requirement.
Expressing his disapproval, Atiku Abubakar condemned the policy on his verified Facebook page, labeling it controversial and urging universal criticism from advocates of intellectual freedom and educational accessibility.
Atiku argued that such a restrictive policy contradicts the principles of federalism and undermines the responsibilities of sub-national governments in education matters. He emphasized the need for decentralization in education regulation to align with global standards.
Additionally, Atiku criticized the government’s failure to support gifted students, highlighting the importance of identifying and providing scholarships for talented individuals irrespective of age restrictions.
In conclusion, Atiku Abubakar called for the rejection of the age limit policy, emphasizing the importance of intellectual freedom and equal educational opportunities for all.
