On a Saturday morning, a fire broke out at the well-known Kara Grains Market in Sokoto, causing extensive damage to grains and properties valued at millions of naira. The blaze engulfed more than 50 grinding shops and also impacted nearby residences. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but it resulted in significant financial losses exceeding N50 million for the affected individuals. Various food items like rice, millet, beans, and other goods stored for commercial purposes were consumed by the flames. Shop owners like Glory Matthew Abba, who lost a grinding engine worth N1.8 million, and Aliyu Achida, who suffered losses of about N3 million in terms of his house and food crops, were among the victims. The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency conducted a joint assessment of the affected area in response to the disaster. Officials inspected the damaged sections of the Kara Market to evaluate the extent of the damage and assured the victims of their support moving forward. Mustapha Umar, the Director of Relief at SEMA, mentioned ongoing investigations into the fire’s cause and urged residents to stay vigilant and report any potential fire hazards in their vicinity.
