Flutterwave, an African payments giant, has announced a collaboration that will enable Nigerian merchants to accept payments from American Express cardholders, as American Express expands its presence in Africa.
American Express introduced its cards in Nigeria in 2023 through a partnership with Access Bank, and by May 2024, four new credit cards were launched in the country.
According to reports, American Express has been partnering with payment processors and banks across Africa to promote card usage in a region where cash remains the preferred payment method.
Through this partnership, Flutterwave merchants will gain access to a new customer base of American Express card users, both within Africa and globally, providing more payment options for shoppers transacting with Flutterwave merchants.
Flutterwave’s CEO, Olugbenga Agboola, emphasized the importance of offering diverse payment methods to cater to customers’ preferences and to help businesses expand their reach.
The service will eventually extend to merchants in other African markets served by Flutterwave, such as Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda.
Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA at American Express, highlighted that the collaboration benefits American Express cardholders by increasing the acceptance points in Nigeria.
