Football fans hit hardest as MultiChoice raises prices, Showmax Premier League up by 43.5%

MultiChoice Group has announced an increase in prices for its DStv satellite and Showmax streaming platforms in 2025, targeting customers in South Africa. The adjustments will see varying price hikes across different packages, with a notable increase of 43.5% for the Showmax Premier League package.

While some DStv satellite packages will experience slight increases below or around the inflation rate, certain Showmax plans will see more significant rises. The company aims to balance growing operational costs with consumer affordability through these adjustments.

The changes come at a time when MultiChoice faces heightened competition in the streaming market while maintaining its stronghold in the African pay-TV sector. Various Showmax streaming plans will undergo price changes, including Showmax Entertainment Mobile, Showmax Entertainment Mobile and Premier League, Showmax Entertainment and Premier League, and Showmax. Each plan will see a different percentage increase.

In addition to the Showmax adjustments, the DStv Access package will also see a price increase, with the largest percentage rise among all DStv satellite packages. Other key DStv satellite packages like DStv Compact Plus, DStv Premium, DStv EasyView, DStv Family, and DStv Compact will also experience varying price adjustments.

MultiChoice South Africa’s CEO highlighted the company’s consideration for the financial pressures faced by South African households. Notably, certain offerings like DStv Stream packages, Box Office movies, and Showmax Entertainment will not see price increases. Moreover, Compact subscribers will enjoy added value with new channels and content enhancements.

With competitors in the streaming industry growing and consumers feeling the impact of price changes, MultiChoice will need to continue innovating beyond price adjustments to retain its viewer base.
