In a recent development, a member of the National Executive Committee of a political party and a chieftain of another party have advised a former Vice President against running for the 2027 presidential election. They emphasized the need for Southern Nigeria to have its turn in leadership for eight years. It was mentioned that the 2027 presidency in the South should not automatically be assumed by a particular individual. The call for supporting younger leaders and providing guidance for the upcoming election was also highlighted.
There were discussions on the importance of adhering to regional zoning for fairness and equity in political power distribution. Suggestions were made for the 2027 presidency to be zoned to the South-South region, specifically the defunct Bendel, now Edo and Delta states. The issue of previous presidential tenure across different regions was also raised to justify the need for the South-South to have another chance at ruling Nigeria.
The importance of selecting credible politicians irrespective of financial status for elective positions in the upcoming election was stressed. The significance of rectifying past mistakes in the political landscape during the 2027 election was also underscored.
Additionally, concerns were raised about the impact of the former Vice President’s involvement in the 2023 and potential 2027 elections on the party’s internal conflicts. Suggestions were made for the ex-vice president to withdraw his ambition to alleviate the crisis within the party caused by differing views on the presidential candidacy.
