Forum advocates stronger democratic institutions

An organization focusing on Private Sector Development for Democratic Forum stressed the importance of strengthening democratic institutions like the media, judiciary, and electoral bodies for Nigeria’s development. This call was made during a briefing session in Lagos by the National Agenda for Democratic Strengthening with Private Sector leaders.

The initiative, supported by the Centre for International Private Enterprise and the American Business Council in Nigeria, aims to promote good governance, transparency, socio-economic development, and democratic institution enhancement.

During the event, the Country Director of CIPE Nigeria highlighted the significance of robust democratic institutions in upholding justice, transparency, and public trust. She emphasized the pivotal roles played by the judiciary, media, and electoral bodies in maintaining democratic principles in Nigeria.

Addressing challenges such as political interference, weak regulatory frameworks, and limited operational independence hindering these institutions, it was stressed that continuous training for government workers and improved civic education for the public are essential. Strengthening these institutions is crucial for a resilient and transparent democracy.

The organization pointed out that corruption poses a significant barrier to Nigeria’s democratic and economic progress, eroding public trust and weakening government institutions. Suggestions were made to enhance anti-corruption efforts, protect whistleblowers, and increase the autonomy of accountability agencies to ensure a transparent and accountable government.

Furthermore, it was emphasized that creating a harsh and intolerant environment for corruption is necessary. The challenges posed by corruption were highlighted, with the notion that Nigeria’s entire system is intertwined with corruption, making its eradication a complex task.
