The interim government in Gabon has announced that presidential elections are scheduled for April 12 as part of the process to restore civilian governance following the end of the Bongo family’s rule due to a coup. The government spokesperson confirmed the election details after a cabinet meeting, stating that voting will adhere to the current laws. The country, under the Bongo dynasty for 55 years, implemented a new constitution through a referendum, limiting presidential terms to two seven-year periods and eliminating the prime minister position and hereditary power succession. A recent law permits military officials to run for office with specific conditions. The current Transitional President, General Brice Oligui Nguema, who assumed power after the August 2023 coup, has expressed his desire to continue in a leadership role.
