The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, recently granted clemency to a number of convicts based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. This included the unconditional release of 23 convicts, commutation of life sentences for two individuals to 15 years, reduction of two death sentences to life imprisonment, adjustment of one detainee’s sentence to 10 years, and commutation of death sentences for four convicts to 15 years imprisonment.
In his message marking Nigeria at 64 and Gombe at 28, the governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving the socioeconomic well-being of the people. Key achievements highlighted encompass infrastructure development, healthcare expansion, educational enhancements, and job creation initiatives aimed at benefiting the citizens of Gombe State.
Looking ahead, Governor Yahaya expressed determination to continue empowering the youth, supporting farmers, and enhancing the overall quality of life for families in the state. He acknowledged the economic challenges faced by many due to recent reforms and pledged to provide palliative measures, including food distribution programs and transport allowances for state workers. Discussions are also underway to implement the new federal minimum wage to help workers cope with the rising cost of living.
