A recent collaboration between the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency and the Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency led to the organization of an educational event called the ‘Eco Explorers Bootcamp’ for children. The day-long boot camp took place at the Dr. Oluyomi Abayomi Finnih Park near Opebi Link Bridge in Lagos with the aim of fostering a connection between children and the natural world while instilling sustainable environmental practices.
During the event, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, emphasized the importance of imparting environmental knowledge to children so they can share it with others. The focus ranged from addressing air, water, and land pollution to protecting natural resources and wetlands. Efforts to reduce emissions from industrial activities in Lagos were also highlighted as part of the agency’s advocacy work.
Adebowale Tolulope, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Environmental Protection, highlighted the significance of the program in educating children about environmental protection and cultivating a sense of responsibility towards the environment. The goal is for children to adopt environmentally friendly habits that will shape their adulthood, encouraging them to become responsible citizens capable of making decisions that positively impact the environment.
The boot camp sessions included teachings on safeguarding natural resources such as animals and the importance of recycling waste materials.
