Grammys 2026: Nigeria goes home empty-handed, Tyla wins again

Despite a strong presence in key categories, Nigerian artistes failed to win any competitive award at the 2026 Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Nigerian stars Burna Boy, Davido, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid all fell short, leaving the country without a trophy for the year.

South Africa’s Tyla won Best African Music Performance for Push 2 Start, beating Burna Boy’s Love, Davido and Omah Lay’s With You, and Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s Gimme Dat.

In the Best Global Music Album category, Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia took home the award for Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo, leaving Burna Boy’s No Sign of Weakness empty-handed.

This marks Tyla’s second win in the category since its introduction in 2024, when she first clinched the award with Water, making her the inaugural recipient.

Her repeat victory underscores her growing influence on the global African music stage.

However, Nigeria still recorded a notable mention at the Grammys, as the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was honoured on Saturday with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy.

Fela became the first African artiste to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy.
