GSMA names Ralph Mupita as new deputy chair

The Global System for Mobile Communications Association, a leading authority in the telecommunications industry, has appointed MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita as Deputy Chair of its Board.

The telecom company announced the appointment in a statement published on its website on Thursday.

In this role, Mupita will work alongside the Chair and Board to shape the strategic direction of the GSMA.

GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath congratulated Mupita on his election, stating, “My warmest congratulations to Mr. Mupita was elected as Deputy Chair of the GSMA Board.

“His experience will be invaluable as we continue to navigate the dynamic landscape of our industry. I look forward to working closely with him and the Board.”

Mupita described the appointment as an honour, emphasizing the role of mobile technology in Africa’s digital transformation.

“This appointment is a great honour, as it comes at a time of rapid technological advancements and increasing digital adoption across Africa.

“Mobile technology will play a critical role in addressing the pressing challenges facing our communities and unlocking the full potential of Africa and the Global South, ensuring that no one is left behind in this journey toward a more connected future,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the GSMA’s strategic direction, adding, “The GSMA plays a pivotal role in representing the global mobile ecosystem. Together, we will continue to drive innovation and positive change in the industry.”

Mupita has served as MTN Group President and CEO since September 2020, after previously holding the position of Chief Financial Officer from April 2017.

Under his leadership, MTN has strengthened its financial position, refined its strategic direction, and successfully listed subsidiaries in Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Before joining MTN, he was CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets, overseeing financial services operations across 19 countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
Mupita holds a BSc in Engineering and an MBA from the University of Cape Town. He has also completed the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.
