Hit-and-run driver crushed my legs while I tried to save accident victim – Amputee

Former driver and father of four, Bashiru Akinola, shares his story of how he lost his legs in a hit-and-run accident after hitting a boy while driving in Ogun State

Could you tell us about your background and early life?

I am Bashiru Akinola, originally from Oyo State but residing in Olowotedo, Mowe, Ogun State. I will turn 44 on May 22 this year. After arriving in Lagos in 1995, I learned the motor parts trade in Owode Onirin. Due to financial constraints, I transitioned to driving and eventually became self-employed after acquiring a vehicle. I got married while working as a driver. My wife is a fashion designer.

What circumstances led to the accident resulting in the loss of your legs?

In August last year, on the 20th, while driving on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, I was involved in an accident after swerving to avoid hitting a boy who suddenly crossed the road with his family. Subsequently, a truck ran over my legs, causing severe injuries.

When did you realize you might lose your legs, and how did you feel?

I learned about the possibility of losing my legs the next day when I woke up in the hospital. It was a devastating realization, especially considering my responsibilities to my family.

How did you feel when your legs were amputated?

I was filled with sadness upon waking up to the sight of my amputated legs, contemplating how it would impact my ability to care for my family.

Have you been able to cope financially after the accident affecting your livelihood?

Financially, it has been challenging, impacting my children’s education and our daily needs. I aim to start a business, particularly in cement sales, but lack the necessary capital.
