The head of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr. Jide Idris, mentioned that the Human Metapneumovirus is not posing a serious threat to the country during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He clarified that while the virus is not widely known, it has been linked to respiratory infections, particularly affecting children and older individuals. Similar to the common flu, this respiratory virus can lead to various respiratory issues.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause a range of symptoms, from mild cold-like effects to severe respiratory infections, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, with supportive care like rest, hydration, and fever management being the primary form of treatment.
Symptoms of HMPV include cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, wheezing, bronchitis, and pneumonia in susceptible populations. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing, close contact, and contaminated surfaces. The NCDC is actively monitoring the situation and following guidelines from the World Health Organization.
A recent risk assessment conducted by the NCDC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and other partners, categorized the risk of HMPV in Nigeria as moderate. The NCDC has reassured the public of its close monitoring and implementation of measures to safeguard public health.
