A Nigerian figure known for activism and politics discusses his passion for sports, particularly running, in an exclusive conversation.

What draws you to sports, particularly running?

For me, running symbolizes resilience. It’s a mental and physical challenge that mirrors the endurance needed in activism. Sports, especially running, unites people regardless of differences, offering a universal connection. I believe in the power of sports to bring communities together and create opportunities for youth.

I advocate for a stronger focus on sports in Nigeria, envisioning a nation where local talents excel on the global stage, bringing pride and prosperity. Personally, I engage in marathons and other sporting events to connect with athletes and promote grassroots participation.

My journey in long-distance running began in 2013, and I have since completed numerous marathons and half marathons, including iconic races like the New York Marathon.

What has been your experience participating in the Lagos City Marathon?

Running in Lagos presents unique challenges due to the weather conditions, but it’s a rewarding experience. Despite obstacles, I have completed multiple editions, including this year’s event.

How involved were you in sports during your youth?

I dabbled in football and swimming growing up, showcasing a passion for sports despite facing setbacks. While my sports journey was interrupted at times, my enthusiasm remained undimmed.

Do you believe government involvement hinders the progress of sports clubs in Nigeria?

I advocate for a balanced approach, where both government and private entities invest in sports development. The sports sector holds immense potential for growth and should receive adequate support to thrive.

Who is your standout Nigerian athlete?

Segun Odegbami holds a special place as a role model in Nigerian sports history. His influence transcends the field, inspiring many, including myself. I appreciate the contributions of younger athletes as well.

What are your thoughts on the nationality of sports coaches in Nigeria?

I believe in merit over nationality when it comes to selecting coaches. Nigeria boasts talent within its borders, and the focus should be on competence rather than external validation. Embracing local expertise can lead to success in international competitions.
