How my wife, I produced biofuel gel from Moringa roots – 83-year-old retired teacher

Chief Samuel Oluwatoye, a retired teacher and scientist, shares his journey from being one of the earliest National Youth Service Corps members to his discovery of the potential of moringa leaves as biofuel. Reflecting on his childhood in Ijeda, Osun State, he reminisces about his upbringing with his aunt and the influence of his family’s farming background. Despite financial challenges, he pursued education, eventually attending Imade College in Owo through a scholarship.

His participation in the NYSC scheme was a memorable experience, highlighting the early days when all graduates were mobilised together. He was retained in Sokoto State, where he worked at the Ministry of Agriculture, sparking his interest in scientific research and nutrition.

After retirement, Chief Oluwatoye and his wife delved into research on moringa leaves, leading to the development of moringa tea and powder. Their journey also led to the discovery of biofuel from moringa roots, aiming to provide an eco-friendly alternative for cooking. Their efforts in promoting sustainable innovations like moringa-based products emphasize the importance of governmental and private support in encouraging mass cultivation of moringa for its various benefits.
