ICPC arraigns NIS Officer over N17.6m multi-agency salary fraud

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission recently brought charges against an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration from the Nigerian Immigration Service, Abubakar Aseku. Aseku is accused of receiving salaries from two different government agencies while still being employed by the NIS, which led to a nine-count charge of abuse of office and corruption.

According to a statement by ICPC’s spokesperson, Aseku allegedly received salaries from the Nasarawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in 2015 while working as a school teacher and also drew salaries from the Department of Petroleum Resources between 2018 and 2019 despite being an active NIS officer.

It was also reported that Aseku, in his role as a Pay Officer at the NIS, facilitated the payment of salaries to seven individuals who were not employees of the NIS. Aseku pleaded not guilty to all charges and his counsel requested the court to maintain the existing bail conditions, which the court agreed to. The case has been adjourned to April 29, 2025, for further proceedings.
