The current Inspector-General of Police recently expressed concern regarding the unauthorized transfer of ongoing cases and misuse of public office by some officers and individuals. The Force Public Relations Officer highlighted the need for transparency, professionalism, and accountability in policing. The Inspector-General emphasized the importance of handling cases diligently and with integrity, warning of strict disciplinary actions for officers involved in indiscriminate transfers or office abuse.
The statement addressed issues such as the improper transfer of cases between formations without authorization, misuse of police authority in civil disputes, and the filing of frivolous petitions. The Inspector-General stressed that cases should be investigated within the jurisdiction where offenses occurred unless expressly approved by his office. He also emphasized that the police have no jurisdiction over purely civil matters unless there is a criminal element involved.
To improve the complaint process, the Inspector-General encouraged the public to direct petitions to the appropriate police commands, divisions, or units rather than his office, except in cases requiring special intervention. He also warned against framing civil disputes as criminal matters to manipulate police intervention.
The Inspector-General reiterated the commitment to professionalism and assured Nigerians of the Force’s dedication to transparency and accountability. Citizens were urged to trust the police to deliver justice and report any unethical practices through proper channels. Severe consequences, including prosecution, await any officer or individual misusing the name or authority of the Inspector-General.
