Independent report finds no evidence of favoritism claims against MTN Group CEO

The CEO of MTN, Ralph Mupita, has been cleared of allegations of showing favoritism towards a female executive after an investigation by an independent law firm.

An anonymous complainant filed misconduct allegations, which caused a stir within the company, with reports suggesting that some members of the executive team threatened to resign.

One of the allegations was that responsibilities of MTN South Africa’s CEO were transferred to the female executive in question.

Following the investigation, MTN stated on Friday that there was no evidence of improper conduct, and attempts to reach out to the complainant were unsuccessful.

In a statement, MTN mentioned, “The board has reviewed the findings and considers the matter resolved and closed. The board has reiterated its full support for the Group Chief Executive Officer and the MTN strategy.”

This conclusion brings relief to Mupita, who faced criticism over the favoritism claims, raising concerns about corporate governance at the leading telco in Africa. Mupita reassured employees that MTN has governance mechanisms to address any issues.

Additionally, Mupita reportedly received support from ten out of fifteen members of the company following the allegations.

MTN’s South Africa subsidiary has witnessed several high-ranking executives leaving the company since 2021, including CEOs and other key officers.
