India recently held a state funeral with full military honors for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who played a significant role in the country’s economic reforms in the early 1990s. Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away at the age of 92. The funeral was attended by top officials, including President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ceremony also saw the presence of Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who considered Singh his mentor, was also present. Mourners paid their respects as Singh’s coffin was taken to the Congress Party headquarters before being cremated in New Delhi. Singh was praised as a distinguished leader by Modi and described as a true statesman by US President Joe Biden. Born in 1932 in a village in what is now Pakistan, Singh studied economics and held various senior positions before becoming India’s Finance Minister in 1991. He led the country through a period of economic growth and signed a significant nuclear deal with the United States. Singh’s contributions to the nation were highlighted by President Murmu, who praised his service, integrity, and humility.
