INEC to pay N1.12bn to family of man killed by driver

The Federal High Court in Abuja has mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission to pay N1.12bn in compensation to the family of an individual named Mike Madu who was tragically killed by an INEC driver in Imo State. The court’s decision includes an order for INEC to pay the specified amount along with 10% interest per annum until the full payment is completed. Additionally, the judge directed INEC, its Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, and other involved parties to send a letter of condolence to the bereaved family.

The plaintiff, Augustine Madu, brought the case on behalf of the Umudurugwu, Umuokwe, Awo-Omamma community in Oru-East Local Government Area of Imo State. The lawsuit, filed on September 18, 2019, sought compensation for the unlawful loss of Mike Madu’s life. Augustine described his late brother as a successful businessman who tragically lost his life due to a fatal accident caused by an INEC driver.

The incident occurred during a trip involving Chinese investors exploring business opportunities. The collision resulted in the death of Mike Madu and one of the investors, Huang Hia Yan. The court’s ruling favored the plaintiff, acknowledging the claims and awarding the specified compensation.
