‘It is outrageous’, parents protest boarding fees hike in Lagos school

A group of concerned parents from Oriwu Model College in Ikorodu, Lagos, held a peaceful protest at the college gate against the significant increase in boarding fees by the Lagos State Government. The parents expressed their dissatisfaction with the sudden raise from N35,000 to N100,000 and called for an immediate reversal of the decision.

The Chairman of the Parents Forum Association at the college, Mr. Kazeem Oladuni, urged the state Ministry of Education to reconsider the increment to ensure that students can resume their studies without financial burden. Parents highlighted that the additional financial strain was unjustifiable, especially during challenging economic times.

One parent, Mrs. Adedoyin Badmus, emphasized that education should be accessible to all without exorbitant fees. The sentiment was echoed by Mrs. Mary Enaayi, who appealed to the Lagos State Governor to intervene and prioritize affordable education for all socio-economic backgrounds.

The parents’ protest included placards displaying messages such as ‘No reduction, No resumption’, ‘We need free education’, and ‘N35,000 to N100,000 is too outrageous’. Their collective plea was for the government to reconsider the fee hike and ensure that quality education remains within reach for every student, regardless of their parents’ financial status.
