I’ve resumed as Lagos Assembly Speaker, says Obasa

After being removed from his position on January 13, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has made a return to the assembly complex with police and State Security Service details, asserting that he has resumed his role as the Speaker.

Obasa clarified to reporters at the House premises that he never recognized his removal as legitimate, emphasizing the importance of following due process in any impeachment or removal procedures. He highlighted the principles of democracy and constitutional adherence in such matters.

Recent developments saw Obasa, accompanied by security officials, reentering the Speaker’s Office on Thursday, coinciding with the withdrawal of the security aides of the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. The assembly has been grappling with a leadership crisis following Obasa’s removal and Meranda’s subsequent election.

Accusations against Obasa included poor leadership, habitual lateness, high-handedness, disrespect towards colleagues and the executive, abuse of power, and intimidation of members. Efforts to resolve the crisis involved meetings with political stakeholders, including former governors and party leaders, suggesting the possibility of a new lawmaker taking over the Speaker position.

Amid speculations, it was indicated that a member from Lagos West might be considered for the role of the new Speaker, as discussions continued among party officials and influential figures to navigate the assembly’s leadership challenges.
