An advocate for women’s rights, equality, and empowerment, a former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, highlighted the significance of these issues for Nigeria’s progress.
Observing International Women’s Day, Obi stressed the need for the government to ensure at least 25% representation in governance and to prioritize investment in the education of the girl-child.
He painted a concerning picture of the status of women’s rights in Nigeria, where many women are caught in poverty cycles with limited access to essential services like healthcare, education, and face various challenges.
Obi also pointed out the educational and security obstacles faced by women, with girls constituting a significant portion of out-of-school children and being disproportionately affected by violence and insecurity.
Addressing the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, Obi criticized the political system for hindering their inclusion and creating a hostile environment.
He cited examples of female politicians facing discrimination despite their electoral victories, calling for urgent action to ensure women’s inclusion in decision-making bodies and increased investment in girl-child education to tackle inequality and underdevelopment.
Emphasizing the pivotal role of women in society, Obi urged for immediate measures to provide equal opportunities for women to contribute to the nation’s advancement.
