The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has instructed all state commandants to deploy armed personnel and intelligence officers to custodial centers nationwide. This directive aims to enhance security at these facilities, recognized as crucial national assets, and prevent possible jailbreaks or criminal incidents.
The NSCDC spokesperson stated that this measure is intended to support the Nigerian Correctional Service in safeguarding the facilities. Over the years, Nigeria has experienced several jailbreaks resulting in the escape of numerous inmates. Reports indicate that thousands of inmates have escaped from various custodial centers, with only a fraction being recaptured by authorities. Efforts are being made to address this security challenge effectively.
