Japa: Don’t leave your countries, college urges West African doctors

The West African College of Physicians has advised doctors in West African nations to remain in their countries and contribute to the improvement of the healthcare system. During the 48th Annual General Scientific Meeting in Abuja, Dr. Rose Macauley, the outgoing President of the College, emphasized the importance of doctors staying and giving back to society, particularly in the health sector.

Dr. Macauley urged doctors not to migrate but to actively participate in the development of the health sector within West Africa. She highlighted the College’s values of giving back to society and encouraged the government to implement recommended solutions to strengthen the health sector and create a conducive environment for young doctors to practice.

The incoming President of the College, Dr. Mamadou Mourtalla, also addressed the issue of brain drain in the health sector, emphasizing the need for governments to act swiftly to retain educated and committed doctors within their own countries. By addressing the challenges faced by young African doctors, countries can encourage them to stay and provide their valuable services locally.
